Captain Kyd (aka Kidd b. 1645) was a Scottish sailor, (privateer turned pirate) and a New York resident. His actual depredations on the high seas were both less destructive and less lucrative than those of many other contemporary pirates and privateers. His ship, the Adventure Galley was well suited to the task of catching pirates; weighting over 284 tons,she was equipped with 34 cannon, oars, and 150 men. The "Adventure Galley", developed many leaks, and Kyd failed to find the pirates he expected to encounter.
The 30th of January, 1698 marked Kyd's first foray into piracy; Kyd raised French colors and took his greatest prize, an Armenian ship. The 400 ton ship was loaded with satins, muslins, gold, silver, an incredible variety of East Indian merchandise, as well as extremely valuable silks.
Prior to returning to New York, Kyd learned that he was a wanted pirate. Realizing that the Adventure Galley was a marked vessel, he cached it in the Caribbean Sean and continued toward NewYork aboard a sloop. He is alleged to have deposited some of his treasure on the eastern end of Long Island, NY. Kyd hoped to use his knowledge of the treasure's location as a bargaining tool, instead he was found guilty on charges of murder and piracy. Kyd was hanged in London on the 23rd of May, 1701. His body was gibbeted and left to hang in an iron cage of the River Thames for three years, as a warning to future would-be pirates.
The works in Metke's exhibition reference Kyd's adventures and they hold the clue to the location of a Time Capsule that Metke has buried on the eastern end of Long Island.
